«The situation developing at high latitudes is a cause for great concern for us».

This is the response of the Russian Embassy in Belgium to a question from the Russian newspaper Izvestia regarding NATO policy on Greenland and the Arctic in general.

Yesterday, Germany, France and Sweden announced they would send soldiers to a major exercise between allied countries , following an unsuccessful meeting between White House representatives and the Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers.

"Instead of constructive work within existing specialized institutions, primarily the Arctic Council," reads a comment from the Moscow embassy, reported by the press office, "NATO has embarked on a path of accelerated militarization of the North, increasing its military presence under the false pretext of a growing threat from Moscow and Beijing."
