The Swedish Public Health Agency announced that it has recorded the first case outside of Africa of the more dangerous variant of monkeypox, which the WHO declared a global health emergency yesterday.
“A person has been diagnosed in Stockholm with the disease caused by the Clade 1 variant. This is the first case caused by the Clade I to be diagnosed outside the African continent,” the agency said in a statement.
No alarmism but high guard according to Professor Matteo Bassetti, director of the infectious diseases department of the San Martino polyclinic hospital in Genoa. "Now with the case in Sweden we will talk about this situation. Without alarmism but by making serious preparation for the problem. The tests are there - said Bassetti - the same ones already used in 2022 when the disease arrived. The target changes but we are equipped. We have already known it, today the clinical manifestations are different, the disease is more serious and more virulent and for this reason we must be careful and make early diagnoses".
"We need to raise awareness around the world," Bassetti concluded. "This is no longer a problem for the People's Republic of Congo."
