The death toll from a gas explosion at the Liushenyu coal mine in Qinyuan County, Shanxi Province, north China , has risen to 82 and nine are missing, the China Daily reports.
At the time of the accident, 247 workers were underground.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered a full deployment of rescue forces to locate the missing and assist the injured , and has called for a thorough investigation into the causes to find those responsible.
Shanxi province is home to much of China's coal mining. The Asian superpower is the world's leading coal consumer and largest emitter of greenhouse gases, despite installing renewable energy capacity at a record rate.
Mining safety in China has improved in recent decades, but accidents still occur frequently in an industry where safety protocols are often lacking.
