Berlin reopens the migrant front: "They will be expelled to Italy." Repubblica writes on its website. According to the newspaper, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, struggling with polls showing the AfD on the rise, has taken a hard line on migrants, particularly towards Italy.
On August 19, the first asylum seeker will be rejected in our country: a 22-year-old Somali woman named Abdirisaq Warsame, who arrived in Germany in March. According to the Dublin Regulations, it is explained, since the young woman landed in the EU in Italy, she should have applied for asylum in our country .
Since 2022, the Meloni government had refused to take back the so-called "Dubliners." In December 2025, Rome and Berlin signed a "wipe clean" agreement, but a spokesperson for the German Interior Ministry explained to Repubblica that for the "Dubliners" who arrived this year, Germany intends to rigorously apply European rules and therefore intends to send them back to Italy .
«A functioning Dublin system is a prerequisite for the success of the European Asylum Reform (GEAS)», the spokesperson states. «Germany expects that transfers to Italy and Greece will be reinstated from the aforementioned date», that is, from 12 June, the day the new European asylum rules come into force .
It is still unclear how many people will now be returned to Italy. The 22-year-old Somali woman, the first to be returned to Italy, is currently living in a reception center in Niederwerrn, Bavaria. On June 25, she received a letter from the German Interior Ministry. "On Wednesday, August 19," the exclusively obtained document states, "you will be transferred to Italy. The police will come and pick you up."
The young woman, fleeing her father and an arranged marriage, arrived in Germany on March 31st after traveling through Italy. Her mother, brother, and other relatives already live in Germany, and it was there that she applied for asylum.
The German Interior Ministry, however, declared that the Somali woman "is under the jurisdiction of Italy" and that "there are no grounds" for an asylum request in Germany. Abdirisaq Warsame, the document therefore specifies, "must be rejected in Italy." A request to the Italian authorities to take back the asylum seeker had already been submitted in June; after the two-week deadline within which the Italian authorities had to respond to the Germans, the request was tacitly accepted. "The request" to take back Warsame "is considered accepted," the letter concludes .
