In a meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog , the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella , said he found the attacks against troops deployed in the UNIFIL contingent in Lebanon, which also includes Italian soldiers, under the leadership of the Sassari Brigade, "unacceptable."
Mattarella also emphasized, it was learned, the need for "respect for the law of navigation in international waters."
During the phone call, the Head of State reiterated "the Italian Republic's determined commitment against any act of anti-Semitism."
The meeting with Herzog was, the Quirinale reports, "frank and open" , with President Mattarella also underlining, it has been learned, "the urgent need to abandon the permanent state of war in the Middle East".
On the social network X, Israeli President Isaac Herzog wrote: "I had an excellent and wide-ranging conversation this evening with President Mattarella. We exchanged views on recent regional developments." He then added that he expressed "concern about the extreme anti-Israeli—and at times anti-Semitic—sentiment that has emerged in some fringes of Italian public opinion, as evidenced by the ongoing harassment at the Israeli pavilion at the Venice Biennale, or the protests against the display of Jewish Brigades flags in Milan. I thank President Mattarella and the Italian authorities for their principled position in condemning these attacks and for their efforts to prevent them," Herzog wrote.
