Maricarmen Abascal, the 87-year-old Spanish woman who became the symbol of the protests for housing rights in Spain, has died .
The woman died at the Gregorio Maranon Hospital in Madrid, where she had been hospitalized since September 23, after being forcibly evicted live on TV from her home in the Retiro district, where she had lived for 70 years.
Her story, which has become a symbol of the Spanish housing crisis, sparked street protests. After ownership of the property where she was living passed to a hedge fund, the asking rent rose to €2,650 a month , a sum she couldn't afford. Hence the eviction and the mobilization of what has been dubbed the "key people."
