Knife attack in Manchester, outside an Orthodox synagogue.
The toll stands at one dead, four injured, and two arrested: the attacker was the victim, struck by police fire after responding to the scene following the alarm. This was confirmed by Andy Burnham, the mayor of the northern English city.
According to an initial reconstruction, the four people involved suffered both stab wounds and trauma from the impact of a vehicle with which the attacker struck several of them as they were leaving the temple, before exiting the vehicle to continue the stabbing attack. The attack on the temple, frequented by Ashkenazi Orthodox worshippers and a place of worship since 1967, occurred on Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement.
The two arrested people, as Laurence Taylor, the number two in the British counter-terrorism unit, stated in an investigation update, are believed to be accomplices of the attacker killed on the scene by police. The attacker has been identified, but his name remains under wraps for now. The official added that security measures have already been strengthened at all the most prominent synagogues and Jewish sites in the Kingdom.
