New York has a new mayor, the first Muslim: Zohran Mamdani, 34, a Democratic candidate (who defines himself as a socialist), with an Indian mother and a father from Uganda, where he was born.

Mamdani defeated former Democratic governor Andrew Cuomo, who was also supported by Donald Trump and Elon Musk, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.

He is the party's new rising star, supported (although not formally) by Barack Obama but not by the entire Democratic establishment.

He won on a platform to make New York more affordable, with free buses, municipal supermarkets, rent controls, and higher taxes for the wealthy.

In his post-election speech, Mamdani said his victory showed the way to "defeating Trump."

"If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it's the city that gave birth to him," the new mayor said. He added: "Trump, since I know you're watching, I have four words for you: Turn up the volume on the television."
