Heavy firefights erupted in Lebanon, with buildings and areas within the UNIFIL headquarters hit . UN peacekeepers, including approximately 1,300 Italians and 500 "dimonios" from the Sassari Brigade , took refuge in the bunker.
While Donald Trump begins negotiations with Iran, clashes on the Lebanese front between Israel and Hezbollah are becoming increasingly violent.
Over the past 48 hours, a statement from the UN mission reads, "intense firefights and explosions have occurred in and around the village of Naqoura, near the UNIFIL headquarters. Bullets, shrapnel, and fragments have hit buildings and open areas within our headquarters , putting the peacekeepers at risk." Therefore, "to avoid being injured," the soldiers have been "confined" to bunkers .
And again today, shortly before noon , a projectile hit a building at the mission's headquarters, and ordnance disposal experts are working to neutralize it. "We believe it was fired by a non-state actor," UNIFIL states, calling on the parties involved in the conflict to "lay down their weapons and work towards a long-term solution." And, in any case, it reminds them of their "responsibility to ensure the safety of the peacekeepers and to avoid any combat action that could endanger them."
