The lava flow of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, on the island of Palma, is pouring into the ocean from a cliff and has caused the formation of a pyramid of over 50 meters.
This was reported by the Marine Geosciences group of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography on its Twitter account.
"We observe live the advance of the lava at the foot of the coastal cliff coming from the southern flow of the La Palma volcano. A massive deposit more than 50 meters high is being generated", is the message.
The thermal shock caused by the contact of the lava with the sea waters is causing dangerous clouds of toxic gases which, however, according to the first observations of the experts, are dissipating rapidly.
A phenomenon that does not particularly worry the authorities as the inhabitants of the area where it is taking place have been evacuated for days or have been ordered to remain isolated at home with doors and windows closed, Spanish media say.
On its way to the sea, the lava covered part of a coastal interurban road vital to transport on the southwestern part of La Palma.
The volcano's flows destroyed at least 589 buildings and covered 258 hectares of land.
