Chinese President Xi Jinping met with former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger today in Beijing.

Kissinger, who is 100 years old, was the architect of the historic rapprochement between China and the United States in the 1970s and is still considered one of the leading experts on diplomacy and international politics.

From what we learn it would be a "private" visit. The US State Department has in fact pointed out that Kissinger "is not on a mission on behalf of the American government".

The same Department also underlined that Kissinger's visit does not "violate US sanctions", with reference to the face-to-face between the former US foreign policy guru and the Beijing Defense Minister, who in the past ended up on Washington's blacklist .
