Her "fault" was to marry a man, chosen freely without asking her family's permission. A decision that cost her her life.

The horror story comes from Pakistan where a 19 year old, Tahreem Fatima, was shot dead by her maternal uncle. The crime took place in a court in the province of Punjab where the girl had been called for questioning about her marriage to a local man. After delivering the fatal blow, the man fled and is wanted by the police.

Fatima and her husband got married a month and a half ago. The 19-year-old should have given her statement before the magistrate, thus demonstrating that she had made an independent choice. But her plans did not foresee the angry reaction of her uncle, present in the courtroom, who started shooting, mortally wounding her. In fact, the relief efforts were useless.

Every year in Pakistan many women are killed for deciding to marry based on their choices. One of the most dramatic cases is that of Sana Cheema, the Italian-Pakistani who was killed in the province of Punjab in 2018 by her father and family. Her parents wanted to marry her to a relative while the 26-year-old had other plans, in fact she wanted to fulfill her dream by marrying a man in Italy that she herself had chosen. But that decision was fatal.
