Khaleda Zia, former prime minister of Bangladesh and longtime leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), widely expected to win the parliamentary elections scheduled for February, has died at the age of 80.

His political party announced it in a statement.

"BNP chairwoman and former prime minister, national leader Khaleda Zia, passed away this morning shortly after Fajr prayers," the party said in a statement.

Zia, considered a key figure in Bangladesh's political history, was the country's first woman prime minister.

His son Tarique Rahman, the BNP's interim president, returned to Bangladesh on December 25 after 17 years of self-imposed exile in the United Kingdom and is widely considered the likely candidate for prime minister in the next election.
