"The truth is that if we start investing in defense when we really need it, it's already too late." With these words, the High Representative of the European Union, Kaja Kallas, spoke via video link at the Peace Marathon organized by the CISL at the Auditorium Massimo in Rome.

Kallas reiterated the need for Europe to strengthen its deterrent capacity, explaining that the continent's security is directly linked to the stability of its social systems: "If we are not prepared, we put at risk every euro we spend on schools, hospitals, and cultural sectors."

In her message, the European leader also emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine, calling it an indispensable step for the continent's stability : "This is why we continue to support Ukraine politically, financially, and militarily. The same logic applies to European rearmament: denying it would be at our own peril."

Kallas then drew attention to the threats Europe is already facing: hybrid attacks, drone strikes, and deliberate attempts to destabilize democracies. Therefore, he concluded, the Union must use "a language Russia understands: that of force," to prevent these signals from being a prelude "to something much worse."
