64-year-old Fumio Kishida has been officially appointed premier by the lower house of the Parliament of Japan. His list of ministers is now awaited.
For him 311 votes, against the 124 obtained by Yukio Edano, the main leader of the opposition. Also in the House wide margin with 141 preference against 65.
The outgoing government, under the leadership of Yoshihide Suga, 72, had resigned after being in office for only one year due to the prime minister's great unpopularity for the mismanagement of the health crisis due to Covid and for wanting to hold on to everything the Olympics and Paralympics costs this summer.
