This was the statement made by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani in an interview with La Stampa regarding the clash between Italy and Spain following the Ceuta scandal. "Schengen cannot be revoked simply out of retaliation, without reason, thereby harming tourism," Tajani added, attacking Madrid, which he said was guilty of "failing to exercise proper vigilance."

"It seems to me that this concern is shared across Europe," the minister added. Tajani then said he agreed with President Sergio Mattarella's appeal ("The management of migration flows must respect people's dignity"), arguing, however, that "people's dignity is not respected by handing migrants over to human traffickers, to their death at sea."

The checks, which began yesterday, are said to concern only a "sample" of travellers (between 5 and 15%) and so far no queues or particular problems have been reported .
