Iranian women were allowed, for the first time in three years, to attend a national team football match at the Tehran stadium.

"I am very happy. This is the first time I have seen a match at the Azadi Stadium," said Mahya, a 26-year-old civil engineer, with the national flag and his head covered in a gray veil.

Ten thousand tickets, of which two thousand reserved for women, were available for the 2022 World Cup qualifying match between Iran and Iraq, Isna news agency reported.

The last time Iranian women were allowed to attend a football match for their national team, after decades of being banned from stadiums, was in October 2019. Since then, the national team's matches have been held without spectators due to of Covid-19 restrictions.
