Iran has been offline for over twelve hours , with connectivity stuck at about 1% of normal levels, after authorities imposed a nationwide internet blackout in an attempt to quell mass protests. NetBlocks , the internet traffic monitor, reported the blackout. The outage "follows a series of escalating digital censorship measures targeting protests across the country and hindering the public's right to communicate at a critical time."
Meanwhile, protests continued overnight in several Iranian cities, starting in Tehran, the capital. The protests were sparked by rising inflation following the devaluation of the riyal , Iran's national currency. In response, Iranian authorities imposed a total blackout on social media, rendering it inaccessible across the country. This morning, Iranian official media broke their silence on the demonstrations, blaming "terrorist agents" from the United States and Israel for setting fires and sparking violence.
" If they kill the protesters, we can strike them hard. We are ready to do so," was the threat issued yesterday by Donald Trump. Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, responded harshly, accusing the Iranians who have been protesting for 12 days of wanting to please the United States and stating that the American president will be overthrown. "Trump should know that world tyrants like Pharaoh, Nimrod, Reza Shah, and Mohammad Reza (the last Shah of Persia) were overthrown at the height of their arrogance. He too will be overthrown." " His hands are stained with the blood of Iranians ," Khamenei said, accusing Trump of ordering the attacks during the 12-day war between Israel and Iran in June .
