Hurricane Polo has regained strength, reinforcing to a Category 5—the highest level on the Saffir-Simpson scale—off the Mexican Pacific coast. The National Meteorological Service (SMN) reported this in its latest bulletin, specifying that the cyclone is currently located 610 km south-southwest of Cabo San Lucas with sustained winds of 260 km/h, with gusts of up to 315 km/h , moving eastward at 19 km/h.
If the hurricane continues on its current path, the SMN says, it is expected to make landfall on the coasts of Baja California Sur by Monday. In addition to the risk of strong storm surges, there is also a risk of landslides and flooding in inland areas due to the heavy rainfall accompanying this exceptional meteorological phenomenon.
In this context, the Civil Protection and the National Guard report having activated emergency preparedness plans in the affected areas, with the dispatch of support units, vehicles, and specialized equipment that could be used in areas where damage is reported.
