"I want to help the prime minister as much as possible in this election season," US Vice President J.D. Vance said at a press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Budapest, marking Hungarian-American Friendship Day.
Washington's number two is visiting Hungary to support Orban on the eve of the upcoming elections. "I certainly don't expect the Hungarian people to listen to the vice president of the United States," but "I wanted to send a signal to everyone, especially the Brussels bureaucrats, who have done everything they can to keep the Hungarian people at bay because they don't like a leader who has truly stood up for the people," Vance said in his remarks. He added: "One of the reasons we're here, and one of the reasons the president of the United States sent me here, is because we believe the interference of the Brussels bureaucracy has been truly shameful."
Furthermore, Vance said, Viktor Orban is "the most authoritative leader in Europe" when it comes to "energy security and energy independence. It's funny to see prime ministers and leaders of some Western European capitals talking about the energy crisis, when they should have followed Viktor Orban's policies in Hungary," so the crisis "would have been much less serious."
"We want Europe to succeed. We want European families to be able to afford to heat their homes and build prosperity. We want an energy-independent Europe, indeed one capable of leading the way. But it cannot be if it continues to pursue the failed policies of the past. And that's why I believe Viktor has been an example in charting a course toward a stronger, more prosperous, and more energy-secure Europe," the US vice president stated.
