“We have been treated in an unacceptable manner, which is undignified between close friends and allies.”
Greenland's outgoing Prime Minister Mute Egede is angry over the visit scheduled for next Thursday by Usha Vance, wife of US Vice President JD Vance, along with a US delegation that would also include adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
A visit that in theory would be private, but for Egede it is not so: « The upcoming and supposedly private visit of the wife of the vice president of the United States and the principal security advisor to the president of the United States – continues Egede – cannot be seen only as a private visit. There will be no meetings between the guests and members of the government in office. The Americans were also clearly told that there can be meetings only after the installation of a new government. It must also be emphasized that our integrity and our democracy must be respected without any external interference ».
A case that also comes at a delicate moment for Greenland: the local government (Naalakkersuisut) is in a provisional phase after the elections won on March 11 by the Democrats . The visit follows that of Donald Trump Jr in early January and the controversy over the US president's statements regarding the acquisition of Greenland by the US to exploit its rich mineral resources. "Being part of the world, we cannot avoid cooperation with other countries. However, this must be based on international agreements and laws," Egede remarked in a post on Facebook. "The times we are in force force us to remain united and not to panic for our country. I invite everyone to remain faithful to what we showed the world last week: we must use the fact of being united and speaking out against unacceptable treatment as a strength. Because we are the ones who decide our future."
