The risk of a kerosene shortage in Europe "has gone from virtual to real in a matter of days ." This is confirmed by several news agencies citing an article in Corriere della Sera, which, in turn, cites two European sources.
"The jet fuel situation in Europe is more critical than previously reported," it reads. "With current jet fuel expected to run out between the second and third week of May—including the last shipments arriving by sea from the Persian Gulf—the continent's strategic reserves risk being insufficient to allow flights in the height of summer in several areas. Only two countries would have emergency kerosene supplies for 90 days, while most would not survive a crisis lasting more than 30 days."
"Aside from the Notams, the aeronautical bulletins filed by some Italian airports, there are other airports on the continent that have been experiencing shortages in jet fuel quantities for days without officially reporting it ," it is added.
Corriere della Sera was able to view communications between jet fuel suppliers and airlines: at some airports, there is talk of a maximum quantity (5,000 kilograms) that can be carried per aircraft or the impossibility of refueling private planes in order to give priority to scheduled flights.
