Four Catholic nuns were kidnapped by gunmen in Nigeria , in the state of Imo in the south-east of the African country.

The police gave the news: spokesman Michael Abattam specified that the kidnapping took place yesterday near the city of Okigwe, while the nuns were going to mass.

"We are on the trail of the kidnappers in order to free the victims," he added, without being able to specify the reason for the kidnapping because no group claimed responsibility for the crime .

Kidnappings for the purpose of extortion are very frequent in Nigeria, often targeting people belonging to the Catholic Church.
