Former French Socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin died yesterday at the age of 88, his family announced.

In January, Jospin had hinted that he had undergone "major surgery," but without revealing the details.

Head of government from 1997 to 2002, first secretary of the Socialist Party from 1981 to 1988 and again from 1995 to 1997, Jospin had run unsuccessfully for the French presidency in 1995 and 2002.
