Serious accident off the coast of Spain , where the Russian cargo ship Ursa Major sank in the Mediterranean after an explosion in the engine room . This was confirmed by the crisis unit of the Russian Foreign Ministry in a statement cited by Tass.

"The Russian cargo ship Ursa Major, owned by the SK-Yug company, sank in international waters in the Mediterranean Sea after an explosion in the engine room. Fourteen of the 16 crew members (all Russian citizens) were rescued and taken to the port of Cartagena in the Spanish region of Murcia by the rescue service," the statement reads.

The ship , built in 2009 and departed St. Petersburg 12 days ago, was headed to the port of Vladivostok in Russia's Far East on the Pacific , where it was due to arrive on January 22.

Several ships sailing in the same area, between Spain and Algeria, participated in the rescue before the Spanish Maritime Rescue arrived.
