Eight people were killed and five injured in a shooting in Assiut, an Egyptian city about 350 kilometers south of Cairo. A man in a private car opened fire on a group of people waiting at a bus stop.

According to initial information released by the Egyptian Interior Ministry, the attacker suffered from mental disorders. A witness raised the alarm, reporting to police that an armed man was shooting at people in the bus station.

Security forces managed to identify the perpetrator. The man then fled toward the outskirts of the city, pursued by officers, continuing to fire at law enforcement. The attacker, who had been undergoing treatment at a psychiatric hospital in Cairo for some time, also died in the firefight.
