The death toll from the double earthquake that struck Venezuela on Wednesday, June 24, continues to worsen: at least 589 people have died , according to the latest official report from interim President Delcy Rodriguez. The victims include two Spaniards, a Portuguese, two Brazilians, an Italian-Venezuelan, and two Chinese.
The number of injured amounts to 2,980, while more than 50,000 are missing , including some Italians.
"We will rescue those trapped; we are working tirelessly on this task," said interim President Delcy Rodriguez, specifying that the state of La Guaira, north of the capital Caracas, was the hardest hit by the earthquakes. The region has been militarized: at least 100 buildings, including residential skyscrapers, collapsed in the city of the same name.
Aid is arriving in Venezuela from around the world, while hospitals are overwhelmed. Italian doctors and firefighters have also arrived, along with personnel from the Foreign Ministry's Crisis Unit, the Ministry of Defense, and the Civil Protection Department.
The priority now is the race against time to search for people alive under the rubble.
