The preliminary death toll from the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia this morning is at least 20, according to the newspaper El Espectador, which reports that the victims were confirmed in the cities of Manizales and Pereira, among the hardest-hit areas.

In the Chocó department, one death and ten injuries were also reported, while in Cali, 19 structures were damaged, with many people trapped under the rubble. Children are reportedly among those trapped in the ruins of a university hospital in Cali. Blu Radio reports that parts of the hospital have collapsed. Rescue teams are busy carrying out assessments and assistance operations.

For now, no Italians are involved, the Farnesina announced on its X account: "The Farnesina, in coordination with the Italian Embassy in Bogotá, is monitoring the situation in the country following the violent earthquake that struck Colombia, causing numerous victims and serious damage to buildings. Minister Antonio Tajani is informed. At the moment, no Italians are involved."
