Eight members of the International NGO Safety Organization (INSO), a humanitarian security NGO, have been arrested by Burkina Faso authorities on charges of espionage and treason . Security Minister Mahamadou Sana announced the news at a press conference.
Among those arrested are three European citizens: a Frenchman, a French-Senegalese, and a Czech national . The others arrested are four citizens of Burkina Faso and a Malian citizen. According to information released by the government, the eight suspects include senior figures within the organization: the NGO's national director, his deputy, and the deputy director general of its headquarters, located in The Hague, Netherlands.
Burkinabe authorities have not provided further details on the evidence that would justify the serious charges.
But Minister Sana stressed that the operation was intended to ensure national security and counter activities considered hostile to the country's interests.
The arrest comes amid a particularly tense political climate. Burkina Faso, led by a military junta that came to power after a coup, has progressively distanced Western partners and strengthened ties with non-traditional powers. INSO, active in numerous crisis situations, provides logistical and information support to humanitarian organizations operating in high-risk areas.
