Fears erupted aboard a British Airways plane that was "one step away from disaster" after stalling at around 4,000 feet above London, according to the Sun tabloid.
Only thanks to the pilot's emergency intervention did the plane complete its landing maneuver at Heathrow Airport. The incident occurred on July 6th but was only revealed yesterday: experts have called it one of the most dangerous near-misses in recent times in the United Kingdom.
The Airbus A320, taking off from Düsseldorf, Germany, suffered a flight systems failure while flying over London's Canary Wharf district: the captain had to intervene personally to correct the maneuver performed by his co-pilot.
“Recovering from this position is difficult, especially so close to the ground,” a source told The Sun. Such intervention by the commander is extremely rare, as it is one of the most delicate phases of manual flight during landing.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has opened an investigation into what happened on flight BA919, when the pilot was forced to take a period of rest due to stress.
