China has urged its citizens to refrain from traveling to Japan, the latest development in escalating bilateral tensions over comments by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Taiwan, which raised concerns about Tokyo's possible military involvement in the event of an emergency on the island.

"Japanese leaders have made blatantly provocative public statements on the Taiwan issue," the Chinese embassy in Tokyo said, warning that "the climate for people-to-people exchanges between Japan and China has significantly deteriorated, posing a serious risk to the security of the Chinese people."

The embassy therefore urged its citizens residing in Japan to exercise caution.
