According to Bild, the former German chancellor was shopping in a delicatessen supermarket in the Charlottenburg district and recklessly left her bag on the shopping trolley. Fatal mistake: someone took away her wallet, with her identity card, ATM card, driving license and some cash.

Police confirmed the theft, while the staff of the former German government leader declined to comment on the fact.

Already when she was in office, Angela Merkel never gave up on shopping personally, a habit that obviously has not changed now that she has finished her mandate, leaving the post to the new chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Generally accompanied by an escort, she was present with her in the supermarket at the time of the theft, according to Bild, a federal anti-crime bodyguard.
