American presidential elections: Trump and Harris compared and the role of Europe
The global geopolitical structure could change significantly, especially due to international relationsPer restare aggiornato entra nel nostro canale Whatsapp
Joe Biden, after some initial hesitations, has decided to give way to his deputy, Kamala Harris, in the race for the White House. If, until that moment, Donald Trump seemed to be able to consider himself in an advantageous position compared to his challenger Joe Biden, the formal entry of Kamala Harris, as his direct competitor, could contribute to making the former's victory not too obvious as it could well impact (Harris's alternation with her predecessor in the race, of course) on the approval of the Americans called to the polls to elect their President next autumn.
And, depending on whether one and/or the other may prevail, the global geopolitical structure could change considerably, especially due to the international relations that could be established and/or consolidated in one or the other case being very the ideological framework underlying the actions of the two contenders is different.
The Republican Party and the Democratic Party are still in confrontation. According to Donald Trump, «Kamala (would be) even easier to beat», while, with reference to Joe Biden, he declared that he «was the worst in history and everyone knew he wasn't suitable». With good likelihood, with these words, the tycoon intends to show all Americans his temperament, to offer an image of himself that can reassure his electorate of his suitability not only to be the best challenger that the Republican Party could choose for this new round electoral, but also the only one capable of achieving a useful result. And not only for his communication skills, but also for that new vision of "governance" that he would realize if he were re-elected for the second time. Even more so when, with Trump as president, and according to his announcements, the existing conflicts could be resolved. And provided that, despite being elected, he really has the potential to translate this understanding into practical action.
In all likelihood, the Americans, and not just the Americans, would seem (the conditional seems necessary) more inclined to hope for careful and effective diplomatic action aimed at restoring peace. As regards Kamala Harris, who during Joe Biden's mandate, in her role as vice-president, does not seem to have distinguished herself in an important way, she could, considering her background and her previous experience also as the country's prosecutor and senator , representing, all things considered, the most qualified challenger precisely because of her positioning herself as an antithesis to Donald Trump and, again, because of her positioning herself as an example of energy and affirmation for women. Furthermore, the election of Kamala Harris as president could allow, at least at the level of relations between the USA and the European Union, a certain continuity both with regards to economic policies and with regard to the setting of the political path and programmatic choices in the contexts involved from conflicts, also given, precisely, the need to continue to pay detailed attention to the Middle East due to the strategic nature of its position in the global geopolitical panorama.
In short, putting it differently, the election of one or the other of the two contenders will end up having an important impact on the future of the European Union and its role. In all likelihood the European Union, beyond the different "souls" that compose it, will be called in the near future to take relevant decisions in every area, and to implement its diplomatic potential to be the sole and authentic mediator between peoples, to be a real protagonist of international relations while maintaining its ideological matrix and making it its significant and distinctive element of strength. A constant commitment seems necessary to find, among the Member Countries, a common purpose on future decisions to be taken at the level of relations, both with the historic American ally, and with the southern side of the Mediterranean and with China, positioning itself as a point of meeting between different civilizations and crucial center of strategic interests. The so-called "Old Continent", due to its characteristic of geographically placing itself between two worlds, could well become a meeting point between different civilizations and therefore fully regain its centrality regardless of the scenario that will emerge following the next American presidential elections.
