Former Corsican nationalist activist Alain Orsoni, former president of Athletic Club Ajaccio, was killed today during his mother's funeral in the village of Vero , in the Corse-du-Sud department.
A hitman suddenly appeared from behind some trees and killed him: he killed him from afar with a single shot , then fled.
Ajaccio's prosecutor, Nicolas Septe, has opened an investigation into organized crime homicide.
The events occurred around 4:30 p.m.: Orsoni died on the spot, according to a source close to the investigation. The 71-year-old former independence activist had already been the target of an assassination plot in 2008. His brother, Guy, was murdered in 1983 .
After studying in Paris, Orsoni became one of the leaders of the National Liberation Front of Corsica (FLNC), before founding the Movement for Self-Determination (MPA), with which he was elected to the Territorial Assembly of Corsica in 1986 and which was later branded by his detractors as the "Movement for Business".
Known on the French island for his political flair, Orsoni left Corsica in 1996, in the midst of a fratricidal war within the independence movement . He lived for 13 years in Florida, then in Nicaragua, and in Spain. In 2008, after a "forced" exile, he returned to Corsica, becoming president of AC Ajaccio: and just a month later, a plot to assassinate him was foiled by the French police .
His brother Guy Orsoni had been killed in 1983 (the body was never found), and he named his son Guy, who became a leading figure in Corsican banditry .
