More than 50 people have died in a road accident in Herat province, western Afghanistan, when a truck collided with a bus.

Local police reported: "Due to excessive speed and negligence, the bus left the main road and violently collided with a truck in Herat province."

The bus was carrying Afghans returning from Iran following a massive wave of deportations and was heading to the capital Kabul, a provincial official told AFP.

Most of the victims were on board the bus, in addition to two people who were travelling

on the truck and the two passengers on the motorcycle.

Road accidents are common in Afghanistan, partly due to poor road conditions after decades of conflict, dangerous driving, and a lack of regulations.

In December, two bus accidents involving a tanker and a truck on a highway through the center of the country killed at least 52 people.
