Over 20 years ago the UK was preparing to face the scenario of an impending 'flu pandemic'.
The revelation comes from some files from the archives of Northern Ireland, released today, from which emerges a document from 1997, sent to Belfast by the London health authorities, from which many similarities emerge with the provisions implemented in 2020 to stem the epidemic of Covid-19.
From what emerges, the document referred to the arrival of a virus from the Far East and the series of measures to be taken in Great Britain, including the possible closure of schools, widespread vaccination and the limitation of international travel.
At the time, the first cases of avian influenza (H5N1) in humans had caused some deaths in Hong Kong but the outbreak was eventually contained with a mass culling of chickens.
