She nearly died after she passed out in the water. There were moments of great fear yesterday in Budapest where the World Swimming Championships are underway: the American champion Anita Alvarez was involved in the final of the free synchronized single when she fell ill at the end of her exercise. For a few seconds she remained under the water, unconscious, then her coach realized what was happening and dived to rescue her.

Doctors and paramedics transferred the athlete to the infirmary where she was later declared out of danger.

Alvarez finally returned to the swimming pool area to reassure everyone about her health conditions.
