It's now official. In 2026, Rally Italia Sardegna will still be the Italian round of the WRC World Rally Championship, but from 2027 to 2030 the world championship will move to the Peninsula and the Italian stage titles will go to the Rally di Roma Capitale.
The 2026 edition will remain at RIS, on the unparalleled Sardinian roads. Then, the move to the roads of Lazio, and the switch from gravel to asphalt. It's been talked about for months, ever since the last edition held in June in Olbia, and finally, rumors of Rome's ambitions were confirmed. Despite the fact that the Sardinian event has always had extremely high standards and positive feedback.
The announcement, made this afternoon via a note on the WRC's official website, was accompanied by that of Sardinia's entry into the ERC FIA European Championship circuit from 2027, the same one which the Rome rally has been part of until now.
The world rally is therefore changing venue despite the three-year agreement already in place with the Sardinia Region, whose support over the years has been crucial to the organization of the event, which guarantees a global showcase and a certified economic return of 80 million euros.
