World pizza day, more than 1500 artisan pizzerias in Sardinia: growing numbers
National record in Alghero: in 2021 it was the Italian city with the most home deliveries

All ready to celebrate World Pizza Day, the world pizza festival.
The anniversary of January 17 was established in 2017, when it received the official title of World Heritage Site by the UNESCO Committee for Intangible Cultural Protection. According to the analysis of the Study Office of Confartigianato Sardinia , in 2022 the island counted 1,519 artisan pizzerias (with over 3,500 employees): in the old province of Cagliari there are 786, in Northern Sardinia there are 465, in Nuoro 786 and in Oristano 75 .
The data confirm the Sardinians' love for pizza with a turnover, in 2021, of around 300 million euros , 410 euros for each household . The profession of pizza maker, even in 2022, was reconfirmed among the most sought after by the market and was not particularly affected by the 2020 crisis, thanks to the take-away methods.
In Italy, three billion pizzas are baked every year, for a turnover of 15 billion euros, with the figures constantly growing. Important record in Alghero : nationally, in 2021, it was the Italian city where the most pizzas were delivered at home .
But this sector too is undergoing increases in raw materials , energy and the cost of transport. According to the analysis of the Confartigianato Sardinia Study Office , which reworked the result of a UnionCamere survey, flour increased by 33.8% between October-November 2021 and October-November this year, EVO oil grown by 29%, that of olives by 43.6%, that of various seeds by 16.6% and butter by 23.5%.
«Despite all this, the increase in the average cost of even artisanal pizzas was only 7% », says Marco Rau , Delegate of Confartigianato Sardinia for food .
