It was Boris Becker, a tennis legend, who presented Jannik Sinner with the prestigious trophy for world number 1 ranking at the end of 2024. The recognition came at the end of a stellar year, in which the South Tyrolean tennis player won two slams (Australian Open and Roland Garros) and three ATP Masters 1000 (Miami, Cincinnati and Shanghai) .

The ceremony took place at the Inalpi Arena in Turin as part of the ATP Finals, the "tournament of masters". Sinner succeeds Nole Djokovic (who won a year ago) and Carlos Alcaraz (two years ago). He is the first Italian to be number 1 at the end of the season since the computerized ranking was introduced in 1973.

"It's wonderful to join such an exclusive club," Sinner said . "It means a lot to me and it's a source of pride to be able to receive it right here in Italy: there's no better place to celebrate this result. But without the people close to me, none of this would have been possible, I'm lucky to have them with me."
