Sardinia wins with seven medals at the seventh edition of Le Mondial Du Fromage et des Produits Laitiers, the prestigious international competition which takes place in Tours, France, every two years .
The island's only gold medal went to Murgia Sergio, a historic dairy company in Marrubiu, for its Monteterno , a hard sheep's milk cheese aged for 6 to 12 months. The company also earned a second bronze medal with its Selvaggio cheese.
The municipality of Oristano also climbed onto the podium with a silver medal: it was awarded to Sepi formaggi di Marrubiu with its Fioretto pecorino cheese .
Four bronzes went to the Garau dairy of Mandas , awarded for four products: the Granduca di Mandas, Cardureu, Colline di Mandas and Piccante di Trexenta pecorino cheeses.
«This award represents an extraordinary achievement and at the same time a new starting point – declare the Sergio Murgia company of Marrubiu – our goal is to continue to grow, promoting the Sardinian dairy tradition and offering the world cheeses that are ambassadors of excellence, authenticity and innovation» .
The jury, composed of around 320 international experts and chaired by Roland Barthelemy , Provost of the Guild, evaluated almost 1,900 cheeses from all over the world, awarding Italy a total of 11 gold medals .
"Sustainability is a core value: milk selected from trusted farms, the use of renewable energy, and low-impact production practices characterize every stage of production," concludes the Marrubiu-based company.
