By the summer, we will know whether the Domus de Janas of Sardinia will be included in the UNESCO World Heritage list 2025. The project, supported by the Ministry of Culture and the Region, represents the only Italian candidacy. This is what emerged at the presentation of "Art and Architecture in the Prehistory of Sardinia. The Domus de Janas" which arrives at TourismA in Florence.
The project will be presented on February 21st to the public and the scientific community during a conference with contributions, among others, from Giuseppa Tanda, president of Cesim - Centro Studi Identità e Memoria - who has been working for years to ensure that 26 prehistoric monuments in Sardinia, including numerous decorated Domus de Janas, are included in the UNESCO List for 2025. In addition to the "fairy houses", the project includes menhirs, dolmens, caves, and shelters. A heritage to be protected, enhanced, and promoted.
"Our work is almost finished: by February 28th we will deliver the last answers to the questions asked. The evaluation continues and will be concluded by March and then, between June and July, the Unesco council will decide whether the project will be included in the list of world heritage sites", said Tanda, "It is a great honor for Sardinia and also for Italy and it will bring great advantages from a cultural, economic and tourist point of view".
There are 3500 Domus de Janas registered, 210 of which are decorated. «A very fine expression of an art that creates wonder: we have chosen the most significant among the innumerable», added Barbara De Nicolo, vice-president of Cesim (Centro Studi Identità e Memoria).
