What does Togu mean? It is configured as a word used by the Sardinians to indicate something or someone very beautiful, exceptional.

Its origins are controversial but there are several theories that try to attribute a derivation to it.

Let's start by saying that it is not a Sardinian word but a word used by Sardinians. The translation would be "togo" and is also used in the north of the peninsula and in the center.

According to the dictionary, Zingarelli could derive from the Latin referring to some masculine form of the word "toga", the dress worn by those Romans at the top of society. In this regard, according to this version, it would symbolize something beautiful with great value.

However, the Treccani dictionary offers a different theory, asserting that "togo" could instead derive from the Hebrew "ṭōb" (good, beautiful, excellent).

There is also a story that dates back to 1920 when it seems that a Japanese imperial commander called Tōgō Heihachirō arrived in the port of Cagliari.

During the night, the captain in question was in the habit of getting off the ship to go to the city wearing very elegant clothes.

However, according to the journalist and writer Marcello Cocco, this last reconstruction is false.
