The box office success of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, the sequel to the original cult film released in 1988 and the latest big screen effort from maestro Tim Burton, shows no signs of abating.

Now in its third consecutive weekend, the unlikely adventures of the Deetz family, and the return of the reckless bio-exorcist ready to throw further havoc into the world of the living, remain firmly in first place on American soil, reaching over 300 million dollars in the global market. An exceptional result, equal to three times the investment needed to make the film, and indisputably one of the biggest successes of all of 2024.

The attention shown by the public has already opened the way to speculation about a further sequel. Interviewed on behalf of Deadline, producer Tommy Harper did not rule out the possibility of seeing a third chapter made, without having to wait over thirty years as instead happened for the film released this year: «I think with Tim's love for this title and the characters, the door is always open, but we'll see what happens next».

In fact, the director does not seem to be of the same opinion at the moment, as he declared in a press conference after the preview out of competition at the Venice Film Festival : «Let's do the math, it took 35 years to make this. At this rate, for the next one I would be over 100 years old. It could be possible thanks to medical science. But I don't think so».

While we wait for news on upcoming projects at the cinema, Burton has returned to work on “Wednesday,” the Netflix exclusive series starring Jenna Ortega that, after the extraordinary success of the first season, is awaiting the release of new episodes, currently still in production and awaiting an official release date expected within the next year. After directing the first four episodes, Burton promises to keep intact the style and unmistakable horror sensations that have decreed the success of the show, as recently confirmed by co-creator Al Gough: «He will direct four episodes. He will directly take care of half the season, as he has done previously».

Speaking generally about the work done on the series, Gough praised the director's commitment and dedication, demonstrating an attention to the project that is independent of any economic or contractual interest: "He loves the show, he loves making it and he loves working with Jenna, and that's fantastic. He's not cynical at all, and I think one of the reasons Beetlejuice worked is because he did what he really wanted to do, he wanted to tell that story. There's nothing cynical about it, and it's amazing when you think he's had a career that's been forty years with an incredibly specific style. We all know what a Tim Burton movie is, and it's so unique and distinctive, and yet somehow it's completely universal. I can't think of any other director like him."

Picking up two years after the final events of the first season, “Wednesday 2” will be even more horror- and action-oriented, as suggested by early leaks online. During Netflix’s Geeked Week held last week in Atlanta, the cast of “Wednesday” was called together to unleash further hype: still in the role of Morticia Addams, Hollywood star Catherine Zeta Jones said: “This season is going to be bigger and more twisted than you could ever imagine.” And echoing these statements, Ortega added: “If we showed you more, your eyes would bleed. I’m not usually this generous.”
