Piano and electric guitar, two instruments to showcase his talent and rock soul. Matteo Trullu, 14, from Decimomannu, delivered a stunning performance on the Junior Eurovision Song Contest stage with "Che cos'è l'amore?", flying the Italian flag in the European competition for young artists. In Malta, it was a successful, understated, and effective performance, designed to showcase the young Sardinian musician's voice and playing ability, without unnecessary effects distracting from his talent.
At his side was dancer Giulia Pincella, further enhancing the song written by Gregorio Castellani, Fabio Zanolini, and Luca Faccini. The finale was a fireworks display. Then, the young man greeted the international audience: "Thank you Italy, thank you Europe." Hundreds of messages of support were received from all over Italy, read live by Mario Acampa, who hosted the Italian edition. Three Maltese talents took to the stage: Destiny Chukunyere , Keane Cutajar and Gaia Cauchi.
For Matteo, this is the culmination of a journey that began as a child, between the Piccolo Coro di San Sperate and his early love for the electric guitar. It's an adventure he's lived with his family at his side and with the support of many artists, from Nek and Antonella Clerici, who appealed to voters, to Samurai Jay and Omar Pedrini, with whom he shared the stage. Even from Decimomannu, the community's embrace has arrived, with Mayor Monica Cadeddu traveling to Malta to cheer him on.
But even before the result, for parents Michela and Davide and little brother Andrea, a competitor in the 2024 Zecchino d'Oro, victory has already arrived: "We're proud of you: no matter the vote or the ranking, for us you've already won. Go Matteo, we're all behind you."
