Archaeological excavations are continuing these days in Cuccureddus, the area where (among other things) a Phoenician port of great importance was located. The campaign, started in 2017, is led by the archaeologist Michele Guirguis (University of Sassari). The collaboration of the Municipality of Villasimius, the archaeological museum and the Cuccureddus cooperative is fundamental. The archaeologists will be busy until October 25th in the excavation of the Phoenician age levels already brought to light during the investigations of the months of May and October 2023.
Numerous finds have been discovered in the last seven years (together with those already recovered in the 1980s such as ceramics, amphorae, pots, Phoenician plates, ampoules), finds that show how enormous the historical heritage still buried in the hill overlooking one of the most beautiful (and least frequented) beaches of Villasimius, namely Cuccureddus.
The research is being carried out under a ministerial concession thanks to the support of the Superintendence of Cagliari. "We have the potential - said Michele Cireddu, councilor with responsibility for Tourism and Culture - to make Villasimius one of the world capitals of archaeology, as well as beaches".
