A dark, visceral, unstoppable sound, like the power of the volcano, which informs the nature of the land from which it comes. “Uzeda - Do It Yourself”, the documentary on the legendary band from Catania, champion of an underground capable of reaching far, without losing its roots, arrives in Sardinia, Saturday, at 3 pm, at the Cineteca Sarda in Cagliari. Filmed by director Maria Arena, the docufilm brings back into the spotlight a story with epic contours, that of a band, Uzeda, who starting from Catania, always faithful to their DIY philosophy (do it yourself, do it yourself) and to the idea of a sound, which was and is the reason for being, have taken their music far beyond the Pillars of Hercules of the cultural province, in which Italian rock has remained confined for too long.
It was 1991, when Agostino Tilotta and Giovanni Nicosia (guitars), Raffaele Gulisano (bass), Davide Oliveri (drums) and Giovanna Cacciola (vocals), sent a demo to Steve Albini, a legendary producer from Chicago, who passed away in May, after having marked the history of alt rock forever, producing albums by Nirvana, Pixies, Breeders, PJ Harvey and as the frontman of Big Black and Shellac. An epiphany: having fallen in love with the sound of Uzeda, Albini flew to Catania to produce their second album “Waters ”. It was the beginning of an incredible story, which would see Albini sign the production of all their albums and the band record for the BBC and play all over the world, always returning, after each tour, to their Catania.
"'The best plan is no plan' is a phrase I have often heard Agostino Tilotta repeat and that's how I started this film", explained the director. "A film to discover how you can live by putting music, research, experimentation, dialogue with yourself, an economy without added value, first. Money, just like the guitar, the bass, the drums and the vocal cords, are just an instrument and sound is not the sum of the instruments, it is something else, it is something disruptive, that is unleashed. A radical position, without compromise, that kidnapped me from the catastrophic and self-destructive thought, imposed on the imagination by the society in which we all live".
