Leonardo DiCaprio did not donate $ 10 million to the Ukrainian army or the Visegrad Fund and he does not have a grandmother from Odessa.
To deny the news, circulated in recent days and ended up on all the major media sites in the world, also filling up with shares and comments on social networks, was the CNN, which speaks bluntly of "fake news".
The American broadcaster has in fact consulted a source close to the Hollywood star, learning that the actor has made donations to the Ukrainian people under attack by Russia, but not to the armed forces or to the Visegrad Fund (which also has it confirmed that it had not received anything), but to some associations at the forefront of humanitarian assistance, such as the International Rescue Committee, Save The Children and UNHCR. However, the figures devolved were not disclosed. The same source also denied the Oscar-winning artist's Ukrainian roots.
CNN also tried to retrace the "chain" that led the news to be picked up on the main world newspapers, discovering that the fake news originated from an article published by Gsa News, a small site in Guyana, in South America, which in turn was based on an unverified post published on social media by a Ukrainian woman.
Patrick Carpen, the director of the site, explained: “We are a small company, with few readers. I thought that if the article about DiCaprio's alleged donation made on the basis of that woman's post turned out to be wrong we could then simply delete it, without too many consequences. "
Instead that article, instead of being muted, went around the world, obtaining hundreds of thousands of shares and comments on social networks.
