Sardinia has the world record for the spread of type 1 diabetes and, not by chance, the Island was chosen among the pilot regions - together with Campania, Lombardy and Marche - to start a screening that will be extended nationwide starting in 2025. "The law that started screening in pediatric age represents an epochal turning point", commented Ugo Cappellacci, president of the Social Affairs and Health Commission of the Chamber of Deputies. " Screening allows us to anticipate the care of people, offering them timely and a better quality of life . Thanks to the determination of my colleague Giorgio Mulé, first signatory of the proposal, and to the climate of collaboration that saw the unanimous approval of the measure, we have achieved a goal that sees Italy recognized as a case of excellence by authoritative international scientific journals and which, confirming the goodness of the initiative, has seen a massive participation in screening".

Cappellacci highlights the need for intervention in Sardinia: " As a Sardinian, it is a source of pride, because my island has a world record for the incidence of type 1 diabetes ," he continues. "We want to continue this ambitious path, in favor of which I have presented an amendment to the Budget to allocate additional resources. We consider the start of the screening campaign a starting point: now, also in Sardinia, we need to redefine an adequate network of pediatric diabetologists' assistance at a regional level, which is essential to guarantee a widespread service in the territory."

The screening will allow us to obtain numerous data to understand how diabetes evolves . "It is the demonstration that politics, when it is united and works as a system with the components of our society, can write beautiful pages, capable of positively impacting the lives of citizens", concludes Cappellacci.
