Strengthening Alghero's image as a city of outdoor sports, attracting international, seasonal tourism, and promoting sustainability, well-being, and local identity. These are the goals of the "Tri-Alghero" project, approved by the City Council led by Mayor Raimondo Cacciotto. This global event will bring two top-tier events to the Riviera del Corallo: one of the three Italian events of the Ironman 70.3 world circuit (2026-2028) and the World Triathlon Championship Series – WTCS (2025-2027).

The Ironman 70.3 is one of the most fascinating sporting competitions in the world: a 1.9 km swim, 80 km cycle, and 21.1 km run. Taking place in Alghero in May, during the low season, it will have an extraordinary impact. Expected attendance is 3,000 athletes per event, 12,000 attendees, 40,000 overnight stays, nearly €10 million in direct revenue per event, and over €18 million in media value. "Sports tourism is emerging as one of the most dynamic new frontiers for the growth of the tourism sector in Italy," emphasizes Mayor Cacciotto. "Alghero is an ideal destination for triathlons and multi-discipline events, where sport, nature, and hospitality blend into a unique experience."

Alongside the main competitions, educational, social, and promotional side events are planned. "It's not just about hosting a sporting event," explains Tourism Councilor Ornella Piras, "but about promoting the entire region, offering experiential packages that combine sport, culture, food and wine, and the environment. The competitions will be held primarily during the shoulder and low seasons, ensuring the full promotion of our excellence." The Municipality will invest a total of €900,000 over three years (€300,000 in annual event fees), funds largely covered by regional resources to support events of significant tourism, cultural, and sporting interest.
